On March 19, 2025, Brenda Biya, daughter of Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, was convicted by a Geneva court for defamation, disparagement, and insult against Cameroonian-American singer Dencia. The court imposed a suspended fine of 12,000 Swiss Francs (approximately 8 million CFA) with a three-year probation period.
This conviction stems from a legal dispute initiated by Dencia in 2021 over alleged defamatory statements made by Brenda Biya on social media. In addition to the Swiss case, Brenda Biya faces a separate civil lawsuit in the United States, where Dencia is seeking damages totaling approximately 66 billion CFA (around $110 million) for emotional distress, medical expenses, and loss of income.
The legal proceedings have intensified scrutiny of the Biya family’s opulent lifestyle abroad, particularly in Switzerland. Reports indicate that President Paul Biya has spent extensive periods at Geneva’s Intercontinental Hotel, with expenditures estimated at $40,000 per day, totaling over $65 million since he assumed office in 1982.
Brenda Biya’s personal lifestyle has also attracted criticism. She has been reported to charter private jets and reside in luxury accommodations, contrasting sharply with the economic hardships faced by many Cameroonians.
These developments have sparked public outcry and debates about governance, accountability, and the equitable use of national resources in Cameroon.
