Gendarmes in Yaoundé Arrest Two Youths with Indian Hemp, Shisha, and Over 200 SIM Cards

Security forces in Yaoundé have launched an investigation after two young men, both aged 18, were apprehended with a significant quantity of illegal substances and suspicious electronic materials.

The arrest was made by a patrol team from the Tsinga Gendarmerie in the Yaoundé II Subdivision. The suspects were found in possession of Indian hemp, various forms of Shisha products, and an unusually large number of SIM cards — over 200 in total.

Authorities suspect the SIM cards may have been intended for fraudulent or unregistered telecommunications activity, raising concerns about possible cybercrime or scam operations.

Local residents have expressed alarm over the discovery, especially given the young age of the suspects. A senior Gendarmerie officer confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the contraband and whether the individuals are part of a larger network.

“This is not just a drug issue,” the officer said. “The volume of SIM cards suggests something more organized. We are treating this with the seriousness it deserves.”

The suspects remain in custody while the investigation unfolds. Officials urge parents and community leaders to remain vigilant and involved in the lives of young people, particularly as cases of substance abuse and digital crime continue to rise across the region.
