The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has accused the Nigerian government of presenting a fabricated witness from the Department of State Services (DSS) during the ongoing trial of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
In a statement released on Tuesday, IPOB alleged that after repeated failures to produce credible evidence in court, the government resorted to using an imposter as a witness. The group described the act as a desperate and unlawful attempt to secure a conviction against Kanu.
According to IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the DSS witness was not a legitimate official and lacked any verifiable credentials. The group insisted that this move further undermines the integrity of the judicial process and highlights the government’s determination to persecute Kanu at all costs.
“This act of presenting a fake DSS operative as a witness is a new low in the continuous abuse of legal procedures by the Nigerian state,” the statement read. “It proves that the government has no case and is only bent on unlawfully detaining our leader.”
Kanu, who has been in detention since his controversial extradition from Kenya in 2021, faces multiple charges, including terrorism and treason. IPOB maintains that the charges are politically motivated and has repeatedly called for his unconditional release.
The group warned that it would expose all individuals and agencies involved in what it called a “malicious charade” and urged the international community to intervene and hold the Nigerian government accountable for human rights violations.
As of press time, the Nigerian government and the DSS had not officially responded to the allegations.
