Judge Orders Probe as Harrison Ofoegbu Remains in Prison Despite Meeting Bail Conditions

In a dramatic turn of events at the Federal High Court in Lagos today, popular commentator and activist Harrison Ofoegbu, known on social media as @IjeleSpeaks2, appeared for arraignment after spending over a year in detention under circumstances his supporters call politically and religiously motivated.

Ofoegbu’s prolonged incarceration stems from a legal battle initiated by Evangelist Ebuka Obi and others, who have accused him of defamation and cyberbullying. However, human rights advocates argue that the charges are part of a broader effort to silence his critical voice online.

Despite fulfilling all bail conditions months ago, Ofoegbu remains behind bars at Ikoyi Prison — a situation that has reportedly taken a heavy toll on his health.

During today’s hearing, the presiding judge expressed concern and ordered Ofoegbu’s legal team to immediately contact Ikoyi Prison authorities to clarify why he has not been released, even after meeting the court’s bail requirements.

“This is a matter that must be taken seriously,” the judge stated. “If bail conditions have been met, the continued detention of the defendant becomes a violation of his rights.”

The courtroom was tense as Ofoegbu, visibly frail, stood in the dock. His legal counsel reiterated that his unjust imprisonment has led to multiple health complications, adding urgency to the judge’s directive.
