Julius Malema Trends as South Africans Mock Trump’s ‘White Genocide’ Claims

South Africans have taken to social media to humorously respond to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent assertions of a “white genocide” occurring in South Africa, claims he supported by showcasing videos of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema.

During a meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Trump presented a video montage featuring Malema’s controversial speeches, including the “Kill the Boer” chant, to substantiate his allegations of targeted violence against white farmers. Ramaphosa refuted these claims, emphasizing that such rhetoric does not reflect government policy and highlighting that crime in South Africa affects all communities .

Malema, not present at the meeting, responded on social media, criticizing the U.S. president for using outdated and misleading footage to support unfounded narratives. He stated that there was “no significant amount of intelligent evidence produced” regarding the so-called white genocide .

The incident has sparked a wave of online reactions in South Africa, with many citizens using humor and satire to dismiss the notion of a white genocide and to critique the portrayal of Malema as a representative figure for the entire nation.

Experts and fact-checkers have noted that while South Africa faces high crime rates, the concept of a white genocide is not supported by data. In 2024, there were 32 farm-related murders, a small fraction of the country’s total homicide rate, and no farms have been confiscated since the end of apartheid in 1994 .

The South African government continues to address crime and land reform issues, emphasizing that policies are aimed at rectifying historical injustices without targeting specific racial groups.
