Lawyer and Client Fatally Shot After Court Appearance in Anambra State

On May 15, 2025, a tragic incident occurred in Egbebelu village, Nanka, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria. A lawyer, identified as Rolex Iloakasia, and his client were fatally shot by unidentified gunmen while returning from a court session. Earlier that day, Mr. Iloakasia had successfully secured bail for an accused individual in a pending murder case at High Court II in Ekwulobia.

According to Anambra State Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga, the victims were ambushed around 11:30 a.m. by assailants operating on a motorcycle. Preliminary investigations suggest that the attackers had been trailing the victims from the court premises. A third individual sustained severe injuries during the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment. The police recovered a red Toyota Camry, believed to belong to one of the deceased, from the crime scene.

Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered an intensive investigation to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure justice is served. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of legal practitioners and the broader issue of insecurity in the region.
