On May 14, 2025, Antônio Rocha de Sousa, a 47-year-old man from Tianguá, Brazil, was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds. This incident occurred just ten days after he posted a video on social media in which he burned a Bible and made anti-religious statements.
In the video, Antônio ignited a Bible and declared, “This here is a Bible, which they say is sacred. Look what it does when faced with fire. It burns.” He further expressed his disbelief in God, stating that religion is a means to manipulate people.
Authorities are treating his death as a homicide and are investigating potential motives, including connections to the controversial video and his past criminal history. Reports indicate that Antônio had previous convictions for grievous bodily harm and was under investigation for theft, damage, and sacrilege related to the burned Bible, which was suspected to have been stolen.
The case has drawn comparisons to that of Salwan Momika, an Iraqi refugee who was shot dead in Sweden in January 2025 after burning the Quran and sharing the act online.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
