Normalcy Returns to Bridge Head Drug Market, Onitsha, After Some Month NAFDAC Closure

Normal activities have resumed at the Bridge Head Drug Market, Onitsha, following a one-month closure enforced by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

During an inspection visit to the market, Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, alongside the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, confirmed that the market had been reopened by NAFDAC after meeting regulatory requirements.

Dr. Mefor expressed satisfaction that 95 percent of the shops had resumed operations, noting that the remaining 5 percent remain shut due to the shop owners’ failure to appear for screening or comply with NAFDAC’s directives.

Dr. Obidike reassured traders of the government’s unwavering support and reiterated that the new ultra-modern drug market under construction in Oba, designed with proper drug storage facilities, would be completed as scheduled to further enhance pharmaceutical safety in the state.

Pharm. Omoyeni Babatunji, NAFDAC’s Deputy Director for Investigation and Enforcement (South-South and South-East), confirmed the reopening status, commending the traders who complied with the agency’s guidelines.

The Chairman of the Onitsha Drug Market, Mr. Chukwuleta Ndubisi, expressed gratitude to Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his timely intervention. He stated that the Governor’s appeal played a crucial role in shortening the market’s closure duration and prayed for divine blessings upon him.

With the majority of traders back in business, both the government and market authorities emphasized their joint commitment to ensuring continued compliance with drug regulation standards for public health and safety.
