An old video of Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, has resurfaced online, stirring renewed debate over the causes of recent violence in the state. In the video, Governor Uzodinma strongly denies the involvement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the spate of killings and unrest that have rocked parts of Imo State, instead pointing fingers at unnamed political opponents.
The footage, believed to have been recorded in early 2022, shows the governor addressing journalists at the Government House in Owerri. He stated that the unrest was being orchestrated by individuals seeking to destabilize the state ahead of elections.
“Those behind these killings are not freedom fighters or any IPOB members as widely claimed. They are politically sponsored criminals whose aim is to create fear and paint the government in bad light,” Uzodinma declared in the clip.
Although the video is not recent, its re-emergence comes amid renewed tensions and security challenges in the region, prompting mixed reactions from the public. While some interpret it as a reminder of persistent political manipulation and misinformation, others question the governor’s handling of security matters and his consistent dismissal of IPOB’s role.
Analysts have cautioned against drawing conclusions solely from past statements, emphasizing the evolving nature of the security situation in the southeast.
Efforts to get an updated response from the Imo State Government on the current wave of violence have been unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, security agencies have intensified operations in affected areas, pledging to bring all perpetrators to justice regardless of affiliation.
