Simon Ekpa Charged with Inciting Terrorism in Finland Over Biafra Independence Campaign

Finnish authorities have officially charged Simon Ekpa, a Nigerian separatist leader, with encouraging terrorism online. According to the prosecutors, these activities happened between 2021 and 2024, mainly in Lahti, a city in Finland.

Simon Ekpa is known for pushing for the independence of Biafra, a region in southeastern Nigeria. He claims to be the leader of the Biafra Republic government in exile. His actions, mostly online, are believed to have been aimed at encouraging violence to support the Biafra cause.

He was arrested in November 2024 in Finland and has remained in prison since then. Finnish prosecutors say he has denied all the charges, but he will stay in custody while the case continues.

Ekpa is a self-declared leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a group that has been demanding the separation of the southeast region of Nigeria from the rest of the country. The Nigerian government has also confirmed that Simon Ekpa is facing charges in Finland.

This case is drawing international attention because it involves online activities that may have caused unrest in Nigeria, but are being prosecuted in Europe.
