Trump Hints at Third Term, Says He’d ‘Love’ to Run Against Obama in 2028

In April 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed interest in running for a third term in 2028, stating he would “love” to face former President Barack Obama in such an election. 

These remarks came despite the U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment, which limits presidents to two terms. Trump mentioned that people have suggested ways he could pursue a third term, though he claimed not to have explored these options. He also hinted at alternative strategies, such as having Vice President JD Vance run and then “pass the baton” back to him. Amending the Constitution to allow a third term would require significant legislative support, making such a change highly unlikely.
