Nigerian Security Forces Open Fire on Peaceful Protesters in Abraka Amid Escalating Kidnappings

In Abraka, Delta State, Nigerian soldiers and police officers allegedly opened fire on unarmed residents protesting the surge in kidnappings affecting the university town. The protest, which had been ongoing for six days, escalated when security forces arrived and fired warning shots to disperse the crowd, resulting in panic and injuries. A video obtained by Naijausers captured the chaotic scene, with voices exclaiming, “Nigerian Army has shot peaceful protesters in Abraka.”

The demonstrators, including students from Delta State University (DELSU), accused local police of neglect and complicity in the face of increasing abductions. The Students Union Government had previously issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the state’s Commissioner of Police to address the security concerns. The situation intensified after a protester allegedly threw a stone at a security agent, prompting the forces to open fire. While no fatalities have been reported, at least one protester sustained a facial injury.

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, confirmed that the Area Commander had taken control of the situation and that the protesters had dispersed. He stated that they had heard reports of someone being shot but had not received any formal complaints or information about the victim.

Community sources indicated that the Area Commander had earlier addressed the protesters, assuring them of planned police operations to search for the kidnappers in the surrounding bushlands.

This incident highlights the growing tension between Nigerian security forces and civilians, as communities express frustration over the government’s inability to curb the rising wave of kidnappings in the region.
