It all started with the doll going viral on TikTok. Now, Nigerian women are buying it for aesthetics. Prices range between ₦160,000 and ₦350,000.
In China, banks were even banned from using Labubu to attract customers. Yes, it's that serious.
Origin of the Toy
The toy has actually been in the market since 2015. It was created in Hong Kong by an artist named Kasing Lung, inspired by a nomadic folklore of forest monsters.
In summary, they are “Satan’s pets” or demons — according to the stories that inspired their creation.
Lisa from BlackPink Made It Go Viral
Labubu went global in April 2024, when Thai K-pop star Lisa from BlackPink posted a video showcasing her collection. She revealed she had been collecting various models of Labubu for years.
After the video, demand skyrocketed in Southeast Asia. Prices soared, and rare editions sold out.
Just this week, a human-sized Labubu was sold for $170,000 (about ₦286 million) in China after hours of bidding. Another one sold for $130,000.
Limited Editions for Collectors
Due to the rising demand, more Labubus were produced. But special limited editions were also introduced for collectors.
Even celebrities like Cardi B, David Beckham, Rihanna, and Kim Kardashian have been spotted with the doll as an accessory. So it was only a matter of time before it hit Nigeria.
Nigerian TikTok Baddies Join the Trend
Now, it’s the hottest trend on Nigerian TikTok. Many women say Labubu “brings out the inner girl in them” and they find the doll super cute.
Some of the dolls are being sold for as high as $3,000 (over ₦4.8 million) in retail.
It comes in various sizes, including human-sized Labubus, which are rare collector’s items.
Labubu as a Status Symbol
Nigerians are buying them for aesthetics — using them as bag charms, key holders, or even pendants.
While many people still find the toy creepy or bizarre, others want it badly. The only thing holding them back is the price.
